Riders bringing the “Black Dog” to Heel in Nannup
Story & Pictures by Cate Stevenson
O
n Sunday 17th March 2019, over 300 motorbike riders & pillions
rode into Nannup as part of the Black Dog Ride’s Busselton
1 Dayer ride. Across Australia, thousands of par• cipants joined
Black Dog Ride’s annual iconic suicide preven• on ride. Nannup
CRC are proud to con• nue its support of the Black Dog Ride.
Tragically, 8 Australians take their lives every single day, which
is one life lost to depression every three hours. An es• mated
180 Australians a• empt to take their lives every day. Black
Dog Ride believes that fostering awareness of depression in
communi• es is the best catalyst for preven• ng the tragedy of
suicide. Black Dog Ride’s 1 Dayer is organised to unite people
together under one banner with one voice on one single day
to amplify a na• onal message of depression awareness and
suicide preven• on. (Black Dog Ride Media Release 28 Feb 2019).
Star• ng in Busselton, the riders hit the road to Nannup
for morning tea, before con• nuing on to Donnybrook.
The riders were united in spreading the message, “Think
Mental Health”, about the importance of star• ng a
conversa• on around depression and suicide preven• on.
Many of the riders had an extra passenger, Black Dog Ride’s
mascot ‘Winston’ on their motorbikes. Winston is a black
dog named a• er Sir Winston Churchill, who famously wrote
about being hounded by the ‘black dog of depression’.
Winston helps Black Dog Riders start conversa• ons about
depression. At least one Winston donned a bit of green in
recogni• on of the 2019 ride happening on St Patrick’s Day.
Nannup locals and visitors welcomed the riders into town,
with the riders apprecia• ng the friendly recep• on (and
farewell) they received. The morning tea provided by Nannup
CWA was delicious and happily consumed by the riders.
The event wouldn’t have been possible without the
support of locals who volunteered on the day, Nannup
CWA, Shire of Nannup and the staff at EziWay. Thank
you to all who showed their support of the event.
Once again, due to the generous support from the Black Dog
Ride, Yahava Koff eeworks and Bannister Downs Diary, the
Nannup CWA were able to raise funds on the day, part proceeds
of which donated to the Black Dog Ride by the Nannup CWA.
