owel cancer is one of the most preventable cancers
yet it is one of the top cancers aff ec• ng both men and
women in Western Australia.
Bowel cancer usually develops from polyps - these are
growths on the inner lining of the bowel. Many people
have polyps, most of which do not become cancer.
However as polyps can be an early warning sign for bowel
cancer they should be removed when possible. The best
way to protect yourself is to par• cipate in screening as this
helps to fi nd polyps and cancer early. The Na• onal Bowel
Cancer Screening Program is a free program for people
aged 50 to 74 years and a screening kit should be posted
to you every two years by 2020.
There are a number of factors that are known to increase
the risk of developing bowel cancer including smoking,
drinking alcohol, having a poor diet, not exercising, and
carrying extra body weight. There are also risk factors that
