Nannup’s Marathon Man
By Pat Twiss
N
annup residents who have watched and wondered
about our Veteran distance runner Joe Twiss pounding
the Pemberton, Bridgetown and East Nannup roads year in
and year out may be pleased to know that 2018 was a special
year for Joe. He recently received the West Australian
Marathon Club’s annual age group Championship Award
a• er winning the State Marathon and four half Marathons
along with the thirty two kilometre annual race.
Joe’s fi rst Marathon was in 1985 when he travelled from
Shark Bay to Perth to compete in a race that was to see a
long term connec• on with the Marathon Club.
His basic philosophy on running is “Everyone has to grow
old but to con• nue living life to the full with ageing needs
a commitment to a high level of physical fi tness”. Other
incen• ves include the pleasure of being surrounded by
‘like-minded’ runners of all ages and over the past few
years, enjoying the added colour and a more fun-loving
approach of the female runners who now almost equal in
number those of the male runners. Another pleasure has
been that of running with and some• mes against family
members from sons and daughters to grandchildren who
seem to enjoy compe• ng with the ‘Old Man’.
2019 will be another challenging year for Joe with the
possibility of improving on the State Marathon age group
record which has remained unbroken since 2005 and
comple• ng the most diffi
cult long distance trek in the
United Kingdom stretching from the Yorkshire Moors to
Scotland.
Best of luck to you Joe, happy running - Ed
