Dear Editor,
The prolifera• on of “Dead Dog” statues appear to be
escala• ng in Nannup and what started as the felling of a
living hundred and fi ! y year old tree some years ago to
produce the statue outside the Road Board building, has
now developed into a plague.
Australia has the worst record in the world for animal
ex• nc• on and the last surviving thylacine died in cap• vity
in Tasmania in 1936. It was shot and hunted to ex• nc• on
in that state. Is this something to celebrate as a tacky
tourist a• rac• on?
Perhaps we should also celebrate the “Tin Tree Syndrome”
to compliment the one adjacent to the Road Board’s dead
dog statue. A Nannup full of • n trees could help celebrate
the destruc• on of na• ve forests and add to the a• rac• on
of the metal cockroaches near the caravan park or that of
the red back spider opposite my shed.
Could it be that visitors to Nannup look forward to a rural
community with a• rac• ve and well preserved historic
buildings surrounded by na• ve bush rather than childish
statements of “Disneyland”, or am I ge"
ng old and
cannot appreciate the aesthe• cs of manmade • • va• ons.

Dear Community,
“Its amazing, wow look at that, I really like and appreciate
what’s been done there, great job!”
These are exclama• ons we all use daily to acknowledge
things happening here in our community, whether
small or large. For the last 2 years or more we have all
been fortunate to reap the benefi ts of what a group of
Lads from the Bunbury Correc• onal Facility and their
Supervisors have achieved. The Lads are part of Sec• on
95 Community work rehabilita• on program to help them
on their endeavours to fi nd work and integrate back into
mainstream society.
The group have cleaned up our Foreshore Park area
including clearing the river walks, adding some well
needed steps and a beaut boardwalk, also they were very
helpful in the se"
ng up of our last Arts Exhibi• on which
was a great success. They have oiled all our post and rail
fences and other wooden fi xtures which has enhanced
those areas.
Most of you would have seen the amazing ar• s• c painted
pickets forming a fence along the side of the Caravan
Park in Brockman Street and also some more outside
the Arts Supper Room Gallery. It was during the erec• on
of these pickets that their Supervisor Dave sadly passed
a! er a road accident. The work on the fences naturally
was suspended...however the Lads requested to return to
Nannup and fi nish the picket display in honor of their well
respected Supervisor.
I would like to say a huge thank you and apprecia• on for
all that you Lads have done over your • me coming here
to Nannup. I know I am not alone in being grateful and
wishing you all the best in the future.
With Respect,
Dale Spencer, Nannup WA
